Letters from Yemen.
With Letters from Yemen, a British and Yemeni artist campaign for peace Today, Yemeni artist, Thiyazen Al-Alawi, and British artist, Luc Waring, launch their joint project Letters from Yemen, a street art campaign on the Yemen conflict. During the pandemic, Waring has been in conversation with Al-Alawi, the last known street artist in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen. Letters from Yemen is a collection of drawings and writings extracted directly from the artists’ conversations about art, peace and the horrors Thiyazen has witnessed. The project launched on the 8th November with a guerrilla poster campaign across London. Attention on Yemen peaked during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 and has since dissipated. The artists' aim is to bring public attention back to a forgotten war. Through art and poetry, the project aspires to educate the British public about the realities of life in Yemen for artists and ordinary people alike, caught in the midst of a brutal war. The project serves as a bridge between communities living in conflict zones and peaceful states, by initiating a virtual letter writing campaign.
